McDonald, Helen Anzonetta, a 58 year resident of Rolling Hills Estates, passed away on Friday, February 19, 2010 at her home. Born in California, Helen was 95 when she died. During her early childhood her family lived in San Francisco, a city she always loved. Later they moved to Sacramento, where she grew up and completed her education. The family also spent a lot of time visiting her grandparents fruit orchards and ranch in Winters, CA. Her grandfather, a early California pioneer, had arrived here in 1849 by wagon train. It was a magical place she fondly remembered. Helen returned to San Francisco after graduating from high school to enroll in the French Hospital Nursing School. She graduated as a registered nurse and would continue to work throughout her life time. In 1937, she set off on her own to live in Los Angeles and work as a RN at the Los Angeles General Hospital. It wasn't long though, one bright and sunny day, she met the love of her life - a handsome and charming young sailor from Missouri, Walter McDonald. They would be together for almost sixty years. Helen was a cherished only child, but she missed not having siblings. She wanted to surround herself with children, they had 5 boys and 3 girls. Over the years there were many great adventures with the family: road trips, camping, sailing, motorcycles in the desert, flying to remote airports in Baja and relaxing at their cabin in Yucca Valley. In the 70's and 80's Helen and Walter traveled all over the country in their Volkswagen Camper (quite a feat in itself). Her passion was her grandchildren, great grandchildren and her dogs. Over the years she extended her friendship and hospitality to many people. Her home was the scene of many great gatherings of family and friends, with the happy noise of talk and laughter and the sound of children racing like a whirl wind throughout the house. She will be missed forever. Helen is survived by her son, Michael McDonald; son, Terrance (Janet) McDonald; son, Paddy (Janice) McDonald; daughter, Colleen McDonald; daughter Kathleen Brannan and son, Walter Shane (Sue) McDonald; 10 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Jessie Smith; son, Kevin McDonald and husband of 58 years, Walter McDonald. A viewing and gathering of family and friends will be held at McCormick Mortuary, 1998 So. Pacific Coast Hwy, Redondo Beach, CA. 90277, on Sunday February 28, 2010 from 2pm to 6pm. Burial services will take place at Riverside National Cemetery, 22495 Van Buren Ave., Riverside, CA. 92518, on Monday March 1, 2010 at 10am.
