Harriett Lucille Oberbeck died peacefully at her home in Torrance on July 9, 2010. She was 77 years old. Born Harriett Huffstedtler on July 29, 1932, she grew up and was educated in Woodriver, Ill. She married Bernell (Shorty) Oberbeck in 1949. They were together for 58 years until his death with Alzheimer's disease in 2007. Through his afflication, she cared for him at home. She worked for more than 30 years at Torrance Memorial Hospital scheduling surgeries and made friendships there that she cherished throughout the rest of her life. She was an avid bingo player and loved the opportunity it gave her to meet regularly with her friends. Diagnosed with lung cancer in January 2010, she nevertheless remained active around her home until only a few days before her death. "I had a good marriage, raised three good kids and had a job that I enjoyed," she said in the weeks leading up to her death. "What more could someone ask for?" She is survived by three sons, Edwin Oberbeck and wife Christina of Salt Lake City, Steven Oberbeck and wife Carolyn of West Valley City, Utah, and Kevin Oberbeck and wife Cathy of Murray, Utah; two sisters -- Mabel Erwin and Arlene Horton; seven grandchildren; and three great grandchildren. At her request there will be no services. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in her name to the Torrance Memorial Home Health and Hospice, whose doctors, nurses and social workers cared for her during her illness. She will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved her.

  1. We have known Harriett for many years through our shared love for Bingo. She was always ready with a smile and a friendly greeting. She was especially happy when she could call out “bingo”!! She was courageous and an inspiration as her illness progressed. She continued to play bingo as long as she could. We will miss our friend.
