Dempster, Grace C., 86 of Redondo Beach passed away on Saturday, July 23, 2011 at home with her family by her side. She was born in Chicago, Illinois on January 17, 1925, the third daughter of Stanley and Clara Kozakiewicz. She graduated from Norwegian American Hospital School of Nursing in 1945 and became a Registered Nurse. She met the love of her life, Bill Dempster in 1947 and they were married on April 4, 1948. They had their first child in 1949. They moved to Santa Fe Springs, CA in 1951 and their second child was born. They moved to Torrance a few years later and their third child was born. They lived in Torrance for many years before moving to Redondo Beach to be closer to their boat, the Aye Sea II. They were very active in the Portofino Yacht Club and the Coast Guard Auxiliary for many years. Grace loved her family unconditionally and was generous to a fault. She loved to shop, especially at Christmas time. She would spend months shopping for just the perfect gifts for each of us. Her house would be overflowing with all of her purchases and we were always amazed at not only what, but how many gifts she would give to each of us. Grace was predeceased by her parents; her husband Bill, whom she shared 51 amazing years with before his passing in 1999; and her sister Sylvia Drozd of Chicago, IL. She is survived by her children Devra (Keith) Nielsen of Cypress, CA; Dale (Cyndi) Dempster of Redondo Beach; and Susan (Larry) Sams of Creston, CA; her grandchildren Christopher (Marie) Nielsen of Cypress; Daniel (Donna) Nielsen of Lake in the Hills, IL; Lisa (John) Van Natta of Beaverton, Oregon; Amy Dempster of Washington, DC; Michael (Sarah) Dempster of Redondo Beach; Samantha Sams of Creston, CA; and William Dempster of Redondo Beach; her great grandchildren, Matthew and Kate Nielsen of Lake in the Hills, IL; Jonah Nielsen of Cypress; Ryan Dempster of Redondo Beach; and "one on the way" in Beaverton, OR. She is also survived by her sister Eleanor Jay of Naperville, IL. We want to extend heartfelt thanks and gratitude to Elsa Lacsamana, her caregiver for the last few years. She took care of our mother with great love and kindness. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, July 31, 2011 at 12:00 noon at the Rice Mortuary, 5310 Torrance Blvd, Torrance, CA 90503.

  9. Dear Dale and family, I am so sorry to hear of the loss of your mother. My thoughts are with you at this difficult time. I hope you have many loving memories to keep. With most sincere sympathy, Cynthia (Jolley) Winston

  10. Grace was the finest and most gracious hostess when she had parties and guests in her home. Grace always made me feel welcome and she was always nice to me. Grace was a really good cook, too. When Grace provided food for a party, she had the best of everything for her guests. I also really liked the Chili that Grace made for the Christmas Event on the boat at the Portofino Yacht Club. Grace was very special in so many ways.

  11. I’m so sorry to hear about the loss of your mother. She was a very gracious lady who was blessed with a full and rich life and a wonderful family. You will be in my prayers as you go through this difficult time. Sincerely, Sparky
