Decorated military veteran, George Benjamin Smith, dies at 88. Smith, a lifelong resident of Torrance and Redondo Beach, CA, passed away, at home, on Friday, July 6. Born October 31, 1923, in Gardena, California to Louis and Veronica Smith, George attended St. James Catholic School and graduated from Torrance High School, where he was on the Cross Country and Track and Field teams. George enlisted in the United States Army/Air Force December 10, 1943. A World War II Veteran, he flew over 31 missions throughout Europe. He trained and served as a Tail Gunner and pilot on a B-17 bomber defending the free nations of the world from the threat of Nazi Germany. For his outstanding service to our country, George was awarded with the following commendations: World War II Victory Medal, American Theatre Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, Europe/Africa/Middle-Eastern Medal. Post WWII George was accepted and enrolled in Stanford University, where he graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. Post college, he worked for his father's business, LJS Valve Company in Torrance. George ultimately retired from a long career in Real Estate .George enjoyed his next chapter in life with his large extended family, friends and fellow veterans. George was preceded in death by his parents Louis and Veronica Smith, and sisters Helen Margaret Smith and Mary Jane Casey. George is survived by his younger brother, Louis James (Jim) Smith of Los Alamitos, nieces and nephews; George Louis Smith, of Los Altos, California, Patrick Casey of Palm Desert, Mary Kaye (Casey) Carpenter of Manhattan Beach, Peggy (Casey) Nisen of Manhattan Beach, Shannon (Smith) North of Tucson, Arizona and Stacie (Smith) Capobianco of Laguna Beach; and many great nieces, nephews. A funeral mass will be held Thursday, July 12, 2:00 pm at St. James in Redondo Beach. He will be laid to rest in a private ceremony at Riverside National Cemetery.
