February 22, 1939 - May 30, 2010
Gary Westergaard, 71, of Torrance passed away peacefully on May 30, 2010 while in Truckee, CA after a battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his family in the beautiful mountain community which he loved. He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Pauline Westergaard; three of their four children Terry Omanson, John (Jack) Steele, Danny Westergaard, six grandchildren - Jason Omanson, Jessica Omanson, Tiffany Kowan, Meagan, Brenna and Madison Westergaard, two great-grandchildren - Kale and Reed Omanson and his sister, Linda Drain. Craig Westergaard, his youngest son whom passed on 6 1/2 years ago was surely there with open arms to welcome his dad after he left this world. Gary was an avid outdoorsman and liked nothing better than spending a day with his wife and friends fishing at one of the many lakes in the Tahoe area. He also enjoyed hunting and in his younger days he loved to compete in desert motorcycle races as a member of the Spoke Benders club. As in most things he did in life, he became an accomplished motorcycle competitor ranked 14th best expert in AMA district 37. And while his heart was in the Tahoe area, it was Torrance he called home and where he raised his family. He was a good provider and even better husband to his love of his life, Pauline. He was always genuinely supportive to his children, grandchildren and all family and friends. Gary was born in Viborg, South Dakota on February 22, 1939. He moved to the South Bay area in 1959 after leaving South Dakota to serve his Country as a US Marine. Gary worked in the aerospace industry for over 40 years and became a successful entrepreneur owning and operating several differrent machine shops. Gary was considered a good man by every standard. His devotion and support to family and home spanned his lifetime. He was a gentle man of few words who made everyone feel welcome, important, and worthy. He will remain in the hearts and minds of all he left behind. We all feel better having known Gary and having been given the opportunity to spend time with him. We will miss him dearly but will smile in the thought of his great sense of humor and bask in the heart warming memories of all the wonderful times we shared with him. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Gary's name to one of the many cancer research foundations. A memorial service will be held on Friday, June 11, 2010 at 2:30pm at Pacific Crest Cemetery, 2701 182nd Street, Redondo Beach, CA.
