Garland Thomas McGovney, a long time resident of Torrance, CA passed away peacefully on April 18, 2009 at Providence Little Company of Mary Hospital in Torrance, CA. with his two sons at his side. Garland was born in Baltimore, Md. on September 16, 1944, and has resided in the Los Angeles area for most of the last 64 years. He served his country in the US Marine Corps before working as a project manager at TRW Systems in Redondo Beach, CA. before retiring in 2002, after 32 years with the company. Garland played softball, loved to fish, and go camping. He was an avid golfer and also enjoyed meeting new people, traveling and riding his bike along the path at the beach. Garland was always ready and available when his church needed help; he delivered meals with Meals on Wheels when they needed an extra person. He was affiliated with the Wellness Community in Redondo Beach, CA. He loved his family, friends and was an avid fan of our National Parks. Survived by his wife, Holly J. McGovney; his brother, William C. McGovney, Jr.; and two sons, Brian T. McGovney and Chadrick N. McGovney. He was preceded in death by his father, William C. McGovney, and his mother, Helen Duer McGovney. Services will be held on Friday, April 24, at 1 p.m. at Journey of Faith church in Manhattan Beach.

  1. My condolences to the Mcgovney family. Garland was a fine man and much respected by all. We were friends, and had many mutual frineds, during our time in the USMCR. He will be missed.
