Robert W. and Evelyn D. Bower. Two long-time residents of Torrance passed away this year: Robert on Feb 18, & Evelyn on Nov 19. Robert was born Jan 15, 1917 in Millersberg, Ohio to William & Marie Bower. Evelyn was born Aug 15, 1918 in Chicago, Il to Axel & Anna Forslund. She was very proud of her Swedish heritage. Both families moved to Los Angeles when Robert & Evelyn were young children. The Bowers & the Forslunds lived across the street from each other & the families were very close. In fact, Robert’s 2 sisters married Evelyn’s 2 brothers. Both Bob & Evelyn graduated from Fremont High School. After high school, Bob entered the Navy serving on the U.S.S. Chester. Evelyn worked for the Salvation Army. They married on Sept 9, 1939 in Los Angeles. Bob was employed by So. Ca. Water Co for more than 30 years as a Purchasing Agent. One of his biggest purchases was a fire truck destroyed by a broken water tank. Evelyn was a homemaker & she volunteered for various organizations through the years. Evelyn had an uncanny knack for finding money. She would take the money, place it in an envelope and give it to a needy person. Both Bob & Evelyn volunteered with Meals On Wheels & RSVP (Retired Senior Volunteers Program). They were active at the Torrance YMCA & they were members of Torrance First Christian Church. Both enjoyed traveling & socializing. One of their happiest experiences together was riding on the Goodyear blimp. They were truly a pair- devoted through 67 years of marriage. They were blessed with 2 daughters; Roberta Parvin & Cheryl Rapske. They are also survived by their son-in-law Rudy Rapske. They also were grandparents to Kym DuPont, Brian Rapske, Mike Rapske, & Cynthia Ruth. Bob & Evelyn were hands-on great grandparents & babysat the oldest of their 8 great grandchildren on a regular basis. Bob & Evelyn Bower - walking hand in hand through eternity.
