Dearly loved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother was born in Los Angeles CA on April 17, 1921, and died peacefully at Little Company of Mary Hospital (Torrance CA) on February 24, 2010. Evalyn was a long time (65+ years) resident of Manhattan Beach CA as well as a faithful parishioner at American Martyrs Catholic Church. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 47 years E James (Jim) Martin, her parents, her brother, and her three sisters. She is survived by her son Craig Martin and his wife Shirley, her daughter Joan Martin, her grandson Jeffrey Martin and his wife Kari, her grandson Jayson Martin and his wife Gwendolyn and her two great-grandsons-Marcello and Dominic Martin. Evalyn attended the University of California at Santa Barbara but World War II interrupted her education when she became one of the many "Rosie the Riveters" at North American Aviation Company building B-25 Bombers, and then met and married her husband Jim in a whirlwind, six-week WW II romance. Years later after her children had grown; she graduated from California State University at Long Beach and worked for the Los Angeles County Department of Welfare as social worker in Children Services and later as staff development specialist. She was an avid horticulturist, and was active in the South Bay Garden Club as well as well as a docent at the South Bay Botanical Gardens. She was also a docent at the Los Angeles Museum of Natural History where she enjoyed guiding elementary school groups through the museum. Evalyn loved to travel as evidenced by her numerous visits to Hawaii and road trips throughout the United States, her trip up the Nile, her travels throughout Europe and Soviet Union, her Alaska and Arctic Circle adventure and her tramping the jungles of Costa Rico. Besides travelling, she had many interests from long-distance swimming, gardening, flower arranging, square dancing, knitting, bowling, stain-glass art, cross-word puzzles to reading. Her funeral will be at American Martyrs Catholic Church, 624 15th Street, Manhattan Beach CA 90266 on March 5, 2010 at 10 AM with a Rosary at 9:30 AM before the funeral service.
