Ernest Edward Barthel, a 22 year resident of Manhattan Beach, passed away peacefully in the home of his daughter Chris on Friday, October 12, 2007. Born in Chicago Illinois, Ernie was 88 years old when he died. He graduated from Tildon Technical High school in 1937 and joined the Army Air Core at the beginning of WWII, serving as a B17 bomber mechanic. He married Geraldine Dalghren after the war and was employed by The Gleason Crane Company as a transportation manager for 38 years. Ernie moved to Manhattan beach after retiring in 1985 to be near his children. Ernie and his wife lived in a little house behind his daughter Carolyn's home where he gardened and spent time with his grandchildren. He is survived by daughter, Carolyn Hylander of Manhattan Beach, CA , daughter and son-in-law, Christine and Dan Hylander of Hawthorne, CA, and grand children, Cari Ann Mueller of Hawthorne, CA, Joseph Hylander of Hawthorne, CA, Jonathan Hylander of Manhattan Beach, CA, Jennifer Hylander of Manhattan Beach, CA, and great granddaughter, Nina Hylander. Ernie was preceded in death by his wife Geraldine after a marriage of 53 years. Memorial services will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church, 4783 W. 130 Street, Hawthorne, CA at 3:00PM.
