Elsa Bacallao Echeverria, born June 16, 1926, passed away on Sunday, November 6, 2011. Elsa was a highly educated professional who held a Doctorate of Law from the University of Havana and a Master's degree in Foreign Language from Mount St. Mary's College. As a District Attorney lawyer in Havana, Elsa perfected the skills of debating, an activity she enjoyed until the end. As a High School ESL teacher and PSA counselor, she shared her linguistic knowledge and her enthusiasm for learning. Elsa enjoyed people, singing, dancing, traveling, sketching and sewing. She was an ardent fan of her grandchildren, family, friends and pets. Elsa is survived by daughter, Ana Echeverria; son-in-law, Douglas Dowds and four grandchildren, Sean, Scott, Kaitlyn and Steven. A gathering of family and friends will be held at White and Day Colonial Mortuary in Redondo Beach on Thursday, November 10, 2011 from 5:00 until 9:00 pm with the Rosary being recited at 7:00 pm. The Mass will be held at St. Lawrence Martyr Church on Friday, November 11, 2011 at 10:00 am. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery in Culver City.
