Ellen J. (Murray) Slawinski of Redondo Beach, passed away on Saturday, February 28, 2009 in Torrance. Ellen was born in Dublin, Ireland in 1925. She moved at an early age to England. At the end of World War II, she met the love of her life and husband to be, Henry Slawinski. A challenge for the couple was that Henry only spoke Polish and Ellen only English. Proving love will find a way, with the help of a Polish/English dictionary, she tutored him in English during their entire courtship. They married in 1949 and after the birth of their oldest child, the family immigrated to the United States where they settled in Redondo Beach. Here they raised their children, were involved in the community, and attended St. James church. Ellen worked at Redondo Union High School food services for over 25 years. She will be missed by her co-workers and many friends. Her favorite hobby was gardening. She delighted in planting a small sprig and watching it grow and mature. She is survived by daughter, Anita Lissy of Torrance, son, Steven Slawinski of Hermosa Beach; grandchildren, Scott and Mark Lissy, Heather, Justin, and Jessica Smith, Tatiana Haddad and Brendon D. Carroll; great grandchildren Chance Lissy and Tyler Lissy. plus the cousins and relatives in the U K. She is preceded in death by husband Henry and daughters, Lori Smith Lemper and Tressa D. Carroll. A mass will be held in her honor at St. James Catholic Church, Redondo Beach on Saturday, March 14, 2009 at 11:00 am. Burial at Pacific Crest Cemetary will follow. All Flowers may be directed to Rice Mortuary.
