April 2, 1911 ~ December 11, 2006
April 2, 1911 - December 10, 2006
Our beautiful mother slipped away on December 10, 2006 at age 95 with the family around her, singing softly her harmonious favorite songs.
Betty spent her childhood in Los Gatos, California, where she was "Miss Los Gatos" in the Miss California Beauty Pageant. She was accepted to Berkley at age 16, but her parents thought she was too young for such a large school, so she went to Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa where she met and married the love of her life, Ward Burroughs.
In 1939 they settled in Manhattan Beach, and raised their four children, Bill, Lyn, Dick and Lee. Betty's devotion to those she loved and cared about was expressed through her tender thoughtfulness and concern for all who knew her. Her grace and elegance never went unnoticed.
Her quiet strength and courage was ever present even during her six month struggle with cancer. She remained smart, articulate and positive. Betty's optimism, loyalty, faith, style, class and appreciation for life were reflective in everything she did. The love she gave to us all will remain treasured in our hearts forever. She was uniquely inspirational.
Betty's love, Ward, preceded her in death in 1988, as did her daughter-in-law, Ann Burroughs in March 2006.
Betty is survived by her loving family, Bill and Lois Burroughs, Lyn Coulter, Dick Burroughs and Lee and Bob Berry, her adored fourteen grandchildren, eleven great grand children, and one great, great grandchild.
There will be a memorial service at Manhattan Beach Community Church on Saturday, January 13 at 2:00 P.M. with a gathering following in the Community Hall, 303 S Peck Avenue, Manhattan Beach. 310 372-3587. All are welcome.
In lieu of flowers, there has been a memorial fund established in the name of Betty Burroughs at the Manhattan Beach Community Church.
