Elaine Seibel O'Hara, the most loving and caring of mothers, passed away on Mother's Day, May 13, surrounded by her family. She was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, John F. O'Hara, a prominent Los Angeles attorney. She lived in the South Bay and Palos Verdes for over 50 years. Elaine is survived by her four children, Jack (Carlotta) of San Diego, Cathy Knutson (Chuck) of Huntington Beach, Peggy Breen (Pat) of Hermosa Beach, and Dennis (Mary) of San Francisco, six blessed grandchildren, Kelly Cahalan (Tom), Kevin and Casey Knutson, Brigid and Brendan Breen, and Jonathan O'Hara; and one especially blessed great-granddaughter, Margaret Elaine Cahalan. A son, Thomas, and a brother, Harold, predeceased her.
Elaine was born in 1918 in Petaluma, California, and graduated from the University of California-Berkeley, where she was a life member of the Alpha Gamma Delta sorority. She also received a nursing degree from the University of California-San Francisco in 1941. She was a member of St. John Fisher Church, the Mary and Joseph League, and many other organizations. She was an active volunteer with many South Bay and Palos Verdes charities, including 25 years with Little Company of Mary Hospital.
Internment at All Souls Cemetery will be private. A memorial Mass celebrating her life was held on Friday, May 18, 2007 at St. John Fisher Church in Rancho Palos Verdes. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be sent to the Braille Institute, 741 N. Vermont Ave., Los Angeles 90029; Little Company of Mary Hospital, 4101 Torrance Blvd., Torrance 90503; or the Society to Aid the Retarded, P.O. Box 1075, Torrance 90505.
