Edmund
Gherna, Edmund Ralph, a 79 year resident of the South Bay, passed away peacefully on Friday, May 6, 2011 in Torrance. Born in Bisbee, AZ, Ed was 84 when he died. Ed lived a full and joyous life, attending Leuzinger High School, El Camino College and UCLA, and serving proudly in the U.S. Army during World War II. He served as Director of Operations and Maintenance for the Lawndale School District, retiring in 1986. He enjoyed camping and fishing with his family at Mammoth Lakes, and with his beloved wife Besse traveled extensively, was a member of the South Bay Church of God, the Sons of Norway and the Hi-Lo Trailer Club. Ed was a man of intelligence, wit, humor, compassion, hard work and courage. He taught his children and grandchildren to strive for excellence, to laugh and be fearless, and challenged those around him to be the best they could be. He was proud of his family, the life he led, and the legacy he leaves behind. He will be sorely missed. Ed is survived by his wife of nearly 59 years, Besse Talley Gherna of Lawndale; son, Edmund Gherna of Los Angeles; daughters, Loretta Raftery of Manhattan Beach; Mary (David) Matson of Torrance and Liz Gherna of Lawndale; grandchildren Bryce, Brandon and Brooke Matson, and Tommy, Caitlin and Connor Raftery; sister, Diane Jaunzemis of Hawthorne; and many treasured nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, Edmund and Helen Gherna. A gathering and viewing will be held at Rice Mortuary in Torrance on Friday May 13, 2011 from 4 to 8pm. Services will be held on Saturday May 14 at 3pm at South Bay Church of God in Torrance, followed by a burial at Pacific Crest Cemetery in Redondo Beach and a reception at the home of Ed’s daughter Loretta. Donations may be to the Miramonte Elementary School-Donation Account, 1400 East 68th Street, Los Angeles, California 90001.
