Dr. Manlio B. Melillo, age 79, passed away peacefully on April 9, 2007 from natural causes. He was born August 28, 1927 in Salerno, Italy and was a top soccer player during his early years. In 1950, he received a Ph.D with Honors in Chemistry from the University of Naples, Italy. He married the love of his life, Carolina Tafuri, and moved the family to Montreal, Canada distinguishing himself in assignments with the country's top engineering firms. In 1957, the USA recruited him as a top scientist joining the aerospace industry and the family moved to sunny California. Manlio worked for 24 years as Chief Scientist on defense systems for firms such as Bunker-Ramo, Lockheed, General Dynamics, and as president of Datakote. His career was distinguished by over 6 US Patents in Thin Film Coatings, published articles in Scientific American, and financial prosperity retiring at age 51. He was a dedicated family man living in Inglewood and Torrance and an avid fisherman, cyclist, traveler and investor. Most of all, he will fondly be remembered by friends and family for his master story telling, keen intellect, larger than life personality, multi language singing, and playing the guitar.
He was survived by his beloved wife Carolina Melillo of Torrance, daughter Anna Melillo of San Rafael, son Emilio Carlo Melillo of Corona del Mar, son Mario Melillo of Torrance and grandchildren Max and Martine and Michael. Sisters, Mina Valitutti and Olga Leggio of Italy; Brother, Ennio Melillo of Toronto, Canada; Brother, Aldo Melillo of Italy. He lives in our hearts forever.
The memorial service was held on Tuesday, April 24, 2007 at 11 AM at Rice Chapel, Torrance, CA
