Doris Evelyn Contus, a 60 year resident of Torrance, passed away in her California home on Tuesday, June 26, 2007. Doris had recently celebrated her 84th birthday with devoted family all around. A homemaker from the age of 17, she selflessly raised nine children with her late husband, Solon, and never ran out of patience or love as seven grand children and then eleven great grand children followed. Doris worked for several years in the community as a "Nanny" to many South Bay families who continued to keep in touch long after their children were grown. In the 50's & 60's her popcorn balls were a draw to all the neighborhood kids on Halloween and her narrow kitchen was quite the crowded "gathering place" for all during holiday dinner preparations. The daughter of a talented musical migrant farming family she played the piano and organ by ear and had a work ethic that set an example for all who knew her. Her love for her family shared in childhood stories entertained and amazed. No task was considered too hard, no child too hopeless to forgive and reach out to. She loved music from Lawernce Welk, Mitch Miller, and Tommie Dorsey to Elvis, Jimmy Derante and Tony & Dawn. She upholstered her own furniture, was always inventing conveniences for taking care of her children or the home and, despite her physical beauty to the end and feminine manners could open any jar in the house no matter how tight the lid. With nine kids Doris never had time for Tv until later years when she fell in love with situation comedies like The Nanny & Frazier. The latter in a DVD format could often be heard playing in the background when you called as it seemed to serve as a comfort and fulfill a need in her for normalcy during many months of failing health. Doris, the sixth daughter of ten children born to Perry & Zella, is survived by her brother "Snaz". Her daughters are Barbara of Arizona, mother of Leslie & Sean and grandmother to Erica, Alex, Andrew & Garrison; Connie of Arizona, mother of Nicole and grandmother to Miranda & Camri; Sharon of Torrance, married to Bill, parents to Marty & Kim, grandparents to Kim's children Madison & Noah; Cynthia of Torrance, mother of Laurie, married to Aaron, parents to Ashley, Jessica, & Jacob; Carolyn of Nevada, mother of Selena; Athena of New Hampshire married to Tom; Doris is also survived by her three son's Jimmy, Johnny, & Michael of Torrance. A gathering of family & friends will be held at Rice Mortuary Chapel in Torrance on Monday evening, July 2, 2007 from 6:30 P.M. until 9:30 P.M. with a Trisagion at 7:00 P.M. The Funeral Mass will be held at St. Katherine Greek Orthodox Church in Redondo Beach on Tuesday, July 3, 2007 at 10:00 A.M. Burial will follow at Green Hills Memorial Park in Rancho Palos Verdes, California.

  1. I’m so sorry to hear of your Mother’s death! I remember many years spend at your home with your family and saw the love and patience your Mom had with all of her children. I remember so well how your Mom would make the babies their bottle of milk and coffee. They would be so happy just drinking away. Your house was full but always room for one of the neighborhood kid to be over. I guess I could go on and but just know that my heart goes out to you and your family in the loss of a beautiful woman your Mother was. Corrina Camou and family
