Born in: New York
Resided in:
Redondo Beach, California
Don was born in New York and grew up in Jackson Heights, Queens with happy summers spent at his father’s family home – Gould’s Landing at Pushaw Lake in Orono, Maine. He received his BA {History) and Master of Library Science at the University of Maine and spent his early career working for the University of Maine Fogler Library and the Bangor School District before moving to Los Angeles to attend graduate school. He received his PhD in Library and Information Management from the University of Southern California, where he also met his wife Kathy.
After marrying on October 9, 1987, Don and Kathy embarked on a life of adventure – traveling widely and living and working in New Zealand, Australia, and Kentucky before moving to Redondo Beach, California in 2003. Don had a varied career but most recently worked as a Library Manager for the County of Los Angeles Public Library. He retired in 2016.
Don loved travel, the beach, music (especially Hawaiian slack key guitar), hockey, and good food, but mostly he loved his wife Kathy, his family and friends, and his dogs. He was known for his kindness, good humor, and repertoire of wisecracks and funny sayings.
Don battled dementia in his later years, but his spirit and his sense of humor remained until the end. He spent the last year of his life at The Kensington Redondo Beach. Kathy and Don’s family will be forever grateful for the loving care he received from The Kensington’s staff, and for the moments of joy they helped create during a very difficult time.
Don was predeceased by his parents Franklin and Ruth Gould, sister Leslie Weller and her husband Charles, and brother Edward Gould and his wife Barbara. He is survived by his wife Kathy; nieces and nephews Amy Callahan (Bill), Christopher Gould (Alejandro), Rachel Wiens (Mark), Sarah Jones (Nie), and Joshua Klassen; great- nieces and nephews Sean Callahan, Cora, Faeryn and Asher Wiens, and Mila Jones; in-laws Katie and Gene Shahariw, Tammy and Rick Klassen, and Jonathan and Marnie Shahariw; dogs Jazz and Hayden; and a wide circle of extended family and friends.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers memorial gifts may be made to the University of Maine Foundation Fogler Library Fund at umainefoundation.org
We love you Don – “See you around the campus.”
