June 19, 1916 ~ April 16, 2008
Our wonderful Papa passed away peacefully at home on 4-16-08 surrounded by his girls. Don was born on 6-19-16 in Coalfax, Iowa. He married Enid Haas on 1-1-40 and lived in Rock Island, Illinois. Don served three years in the Army and was a decorated WWII veteran. He received the Bronze Star and the French Croix De Guere. He was a heavy artillery gunner with the 208th Field Artillery and stormed the beaches at Normandy. Don and Enid moved to Torrance in 1958 and raised two children. He worked for Union Carbide Chemicals for over 20 years. When Don retired he and Enid traveled to many foreign countries and took many wonderful cruises with their friends. He was an avid golfer for most of his life and loved playing with his close friends Bud and Burt. He passed on his wisdom of the game to his great-grandson, Anthony. One of his greatest joys was playing golf in
Scotland on the Old Course. Don was a Dodger fan and loved going to games with his family. He was the best dad, grandpa and father-in-law anyone could ask for. We will miss him but know he is in heaven with Moomoo. Don leaves behind his daughter, Becky (Richard) Cortez,
granddaughters, Gina and Jessi, great grandson, Anthony, "adopted" daughter, Judy, brother, Bill Miles, sister, Bernice Peterson both of Illinois, sister, Helen Smith of Arkansas and many nieces and nephews who loved him very much. He was preceded in death by his wife, Enid and son Greg. A celebration of Dad's life will be on May 4th, 12-4 at his home.
