We celebrate the home-going of Deloris Ann (Spangelo) Holen. Jesus took her to be with Him on January 19, 2012. Deloris was born April 19, 1932 in Walhalla, North Dakota to William and Emily (Crowston) Spangelo of Concrete, North Dakota. She was the second of five daughters. In 1952, after graduating from Mayville State College in Mayville, North Dakota, she taught school in Fargo, North Dakota and then in Madera, California. Deloris married her high school sweetheart, Judeen (Dean) Holen on August 19, 1956 in Mountain, North Dakota. They moved to Hawthorne, California and began their life together. Deloris taught school in Manhattan Beach, California, retiring before the birth of their first of four children. Over the next 53 years, Deloris dedicated her life to being a loving, caring and giving wife, mother and grandmother. She faithfully attended her children's sporting events and other activities, was a Girl Scout leader, a Cub Scout Den Mother and First Aid "Lady" at Girl Scout camps. Nominated by her children, Deloris was honored by Hawthorne's Chamber of Commerce, Women's Division as Mother of the Year in 1978. In 1974, Deloris returned to working with elementary school children. She cooked and served lunches to the children of Juan de Anza Elementary School until her retirement in 2002. Many of these students, along with her children's friends dropped by or said hi to Deloris, long after they were out of elementary and high school. Deloris blessed her Lord and us with her love for music and gift of song during her many years as a member of the Chancel Choir at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hawthorne, California. We will always remember her loving laugh and welcoming heart. Those of us waiting to join her will miss her greatly: husband Judeen (Dean) Holen; children Terrilee (Chuck Schober), Luaine (Bryan Koenen), Bradley (Paula), and Jeffrey (Beth); grandchildren Chuck and Madelynn Schober, Donald (DJ) and Jessica Koenen, Ruth, Dorothy, Benjamin, and Joseph Holen, and Jeffrey (JJ) and Jessamyn Holen; sisters Mary Ellen Samuelson, Wilma Loy (Darrell Brandt), Edna (Ronald Sharp), and Sharon Ross; a host of loving relatives and many dear friends. The viewing, visitation and service of celebration will be January 25, 2012 at Rice Mortuary 5310 Torrance Blvd, Torrance, California. 1. Although many miles have separated us through the years, we will always fondly remember Deloris. She was a dear friend and neighbor to my parents, Gene and Joan Harris when they lived in California. I know my mother will truly miss her voice at the other end of the phone line. Deloris introduced her sister, Sharon, to me in the ’70’s and we’ve been able to remain friends throughout the years. The gift of friendship is something Deloris gave freely…thank you Deloris…God bless you. Our prayers are with you and the family. May God give them strength at this most difficult time. With our deepest sympathy, Cinda and Bob

  2. My sincere sympathy goes out to all the family members of Deloris. I enjoyed working with her at Anza when I was there as the substitute school nurse and when I was doing vision and hearing testing.

  3. Dear Holen Family, May peace be with you during this time. I had the opportunity to know your mom for most of my life. I must say that she loved her kids and even more so her grandkids. Working with her at Anza was fun and even though I was a grown up at the time, I couldn’t call her Deloris, To me she was always Mrs. Holen. Sorry I can not be there tomorrow but I will hold you all in my prayers for the Dye Family.
