Clyde Kellam Voss, 82, a 30-year resident of Rancho Palos Verdes, passed away on Saturday, Nov. 20, 2004, in Torrance.
Born in Robstown, Texas, he attended Texas A&M University until World War II started and he joined the U.S. Army Air Corps.
He flew fighter combat missions over Europe, until shot down by ground fire over the Netherlands in the ''Market Garden'' Campaign. Evading capture for one month with the assistance of the ''Underground,'' he and other soldiers were ferried across the Rhine river in ''Operation Pegasus'' as depicted in the HBO series, ''Band of Brothers.''
In 1947, Clyde was chosen to be a pilot in the first operational jet fighter squadron in Riverside, CA. Clyde also served in the Korean War flying RF-86s. His military awards included the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal, and the Bronze Star. He remained an active member of various Air Force Fighter Group Associations.
Following his 24-year Air Force career, he spent 22 years as a marketing executive for Northrop Corp. During this career Clyde, and sometimes his wife, Priss, traveled worldwide in his business pursuits.
Clyde loved gardening, golf and participation in the Elk's Club of Gardena. Very active in the Methodist Church, Clyde had been a member of Riviera United Methodist Church for the past 38 years.
Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Jane ''Priss'' Voss; daughter, Martye Alcini of Atlanta, GA; sons, Don Voss and wife Stephanie Hensley Voss of Laguna Niguel and Larry Voss of San Diego; four grandchildren, Suzy, Sara, Sharon and David; and two great-grandchildren, Samantha and Summer. Clyde will remain in the hearts of all who loved him.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Dec. 5, 2004, at Riviera Methodist Church, 375 Palos Verdes Blvd., Redondo Beach, CA. 90277; (310) 378-9273.
