Cheryle Elizabeth (Curtis) Smith, 85 Manhattan Beach, CA - Cheryle C. Smith, 85, died Saturday, July 31st, 2010 at Sunrise Assisted Living in Hermosa Beach, after an extended illness. Mrs. Smith retired from TRW in 1990 after a career of more than 30 years as an engineer. She managed numerous developmental projects for the Department of Defense including weapons systems, communications and computer hardware and software. During her outstanding career, she was recognized as an expert in large airships. Mrs. Smith was a recipient of the Meritorious Civilian Service Award, the highest such award bestowed by the United States Air Force.Born in Laporte, Indiana, she and her husband of 60 years, moved to Manhattan Beach, California in 1968. An accomplished artist and musician, she performed with the Beach Cities Symphony Orchestra for many years. Survivors include her husband, Lt. Col., Robert T. Smith, Jr. (U.S. Air Force, Retired); Jayne Hay (sister); Jeanne Eversole (cousin); a niece, and two nephews. Services will be at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, August 5, 2010 at Rice Mortuary, 5310 Torrance Blvd, Torrance, California. She will be laid to rest at Gardens of Memory Cemetery, Muncie, Indiana. Memorial contributions may be made upon the donor's choice in memory of Mrs. Smith.

  1. I remember Cheryle as an important member of our string section. Beach Cities Symphony begins its season #61 this fall, thanks to volunteers like Cheryle. Much sympathy to her family. Bob Peterson, President, Beach Cities Symphony Assn. (and French Horn player.) Interestingly enough, Yvonne Tressel, cello, is also a current resident at Sunrise and former musician with BCSO.
