CATHERINE A. NEWMAN 1910 - 2012 Catherine "Kay" Alegra Newman of Torrance, surrounded by her five children, passed away peacefully on Friday, June 29th at the age of 102. Kay was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend. Leading a busy, active, and full life right up to the end, Kay was a legend to all who knew her. She was actively involved with her family, friends, and church and will be missed by all. Kay, the 4th of 5 daughters, was born in Galesburg, IL on April 1, 1910 to John and Anna Hoehnen. She grew up in Bushnell, IL and after graduating from business school moved to Milwaukee, WI where she met Jerome "Jerry" Newman in 1931. They were married on August 26, 1939. After the loss of their first child, Mary Ann, Jerry and Kay were blessed with 5 more children, raising them all in Wauwatosa, WI. In 1972, Jerry and Kay followed their children to southern CA and settled in Van Nuys. Jerry passed away in 1985, and in 1989 Kay moved to the South Bay and became a member of American Martyrs Church. For 23 years she was active in the Altar Society, the 55+ Club, and other parish ministries. Kay loved to play cards with her friends and was an avid and regular bingo player with her many friends at the Manhattan Heights Senior Center. She adored her family, cherished her friends, and loved her Catholic faith. She is survived by her 5-children: Barbara Seifritz, John Newman, Jim Newman (Esther), Bonnie Cravitz (David), and Christine Conway (John); 8-grandchildren: Jay, Lysa (Ron), Danielle (Tom), Michael, Ryan, Angela (Joshua), John "JJ", and Caitlin; and 7-great grandchildren: Daniel, Brittany, Jayson, Mackenzie, Alison, Caden and Cooper. Kay is preceded in death by her parents, sisters, husband Jerry, daughter Mary Ann, son-in-law Tom Seifritz, daughter -in-law Barbara Helen Newman, and granddaughter Robyn Roberts. A special "thank you" from Kay's family to the doctors, nurses, and staff at Kaiser Hospital, the Sunnyside Nursing Center, and the Del Amo Gardens Care Center for their care, support, and dedication to Kay during her last weeks. Viewing at 9:00 AM, Rosary at 9:30 AM, and Mass at 10:00 AM. Burial will be at San Fernando Mission Cemetery in Mission Hills.

  1. Your mother was so adorable and she was so sweet. It was always so much fun to see her at your many family functions. That little rascal never wanted to miss a thing! It is great that she had such a long and happy life and that all of you took such good care of her during and at the end of her life. We will miss her.
