Carolyn Irene (Marr) Lochhead, long-time resident of Redondo Beach, died at her home on Sunday, 11 February 2007. Carolyn was born in Omaha, Nebraska in 1929 and was adopted through the Nebraska Children's Home by Don and Irene Marr. She grew up on a farm in eastern Nebraska and attended school in a one-room schoolhouse until high school in the local town of Tekamah. Carolyn, along with her husband George, son James, and daughter Judith, lived throughout the western states of the United States, including Nebraska, Arizona, Wyoming, Oregon, Idaho, and finally setling in southern California in 1968. In 1970 after her children were away at college, Carolyn herself went to college and graduated from California State University at Fullerton in 1974 with a major in early childhood education. In 1980 she opened the Sunflower Preschool in Redondo Beach at 2400 Nelson Avenue, which is still in operation today. The education of young children was her passion. Carolyn died after two years of fighting off serious genetic lung disorders. She is survived by a son, James Lochhead of Redondo Beach; a daughter, Judith Lochhead of New York City; a son-in-law, George Fisher of New York City; and two grandsons, Christopher Fisher-Lochhead of San Francisco and Daniel Fisher-Lochhead of Ann Arbor. A memorial service will be held at the Sunflower Pre-School on Saturday, 17 February 2007 at 2 p.m. Memorial donations can be made to the American Diabetes Association.
