Billy Samuel Bates, a resident of Torrance for 56 years, passed away June 17, 2013 at age 91. Born in Aline, OK, July 22, 1921 to Charles and Alverda Bates. The youngest of five children, he moved to CO with his family at an early age. During World War II, he served in the CBI Theater. In 1953, he moved to Los Angeles with his wife Norma, and young son, Tommy where he worked for Northrop and Douglas Aircraft. Also, he was a Union carpenter, and worked out of Locals 1478 and 630. Hobbies included building and racing gas powered model airplanes, archery, camping, fishing, growing orchids and sculpting. Survived by his wife, Norma of 67 years, son Tommy, sister Helen Marie and many nieces and nephews.
