Beverly Diane (Jahnz) Tietjen
February 16, 1936 – April 4, 2014
Beverly Tietjen passed away suddenly and without pain while in the company of her family after a full life at the age of 78.
Beverly's life was her family, her church, and her students. Her strong Christian faith was ever-present in her life and guided her throughout the journey here on earth. She is remembered fondly by her husband of 53 years, Donald; her children John, David, Mark and Karen; and her grandchildren Kaycee, Khristian, Kate, Averie and Siena. She is predeceased by her parents Leonard and Mabel (Carter) Jahnz, and her brothers Leonard Jr. (L.J.) and Courtney.
She grew up in Los Angeles, where she attended Faith Lutheran Elementary and Washington High School (1953). She went on to attend St. John's College, Kansas and then California State University, Los Angeles, where she received a bachelor's and master's degree in Education.
Beverly loved her work and the success of her students was paramount. Her teaching made a positive impact on the lives of many of Los Angeles' kindergarten through eighth graders, as a teacher at Faith Lutheran, First Lutheran, 55th Street School, Menlo Avenue, Grandview and Walgrove Elementary. She moved from teaching to administration, including 18 years as the Principal of Brentwood Science Magnet Elementary School, as well as Wilshire Crest and Wilshire Elementary School (Korean Institute of Los Angeles). Beverly was at the forefront of the LAUSD Magnet Program which has become one of the most successful in the nation – providing high-quality instruction, a rigorous curriculum and educational opportunities to underprivileged youths. She retired with accolades after over 40 years of service to the LAUSD.
Beverly was passionate about serving the Lord and sharing her love of Jesus Christ. She was an active long time member of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Westchester, where she taught Sunday school and served on the Board of Directors of the preschool. Additionally, she was active in the Southern California District Lutheran Youth Organization, Lutheran Women Missionary League (LWML), Board of Directors Pacific Southwest District of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod, the Board of Directors of Good Shepherd Lutheran Home of the West for the developmentally challenged, a Key Officer of the Thrivent Financial L.A. Chapter, and other ministries. Beverly was the first to volunteer when help was needed and she was always encouraging others to get involved.
We, who knew Beverly, will miss her infectious positive attitude. She was always fully engaged in her pursuits, striving for the highest standards for herself and others. She was a beautiful person inside and out. Her example of a life well lived is an inspiration to all who knew her and she will be missed dearly.
A memorial service will be held at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Westchester at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 26.
