Schaeffer, Betty, a 45 year resident of Torrance, passed away June 19, 2006. Born in New York City, she spent her early years in upstate New York, then later New York City where she worked at Lord and Taylor's Department Store. In the early 50's, Betty ventured to California, lived in Inglewood and worked at TWA. She married in 1955 and settled in Torrance soon after to raise a family. For many years, she was an active volunteer at St. James Catholic Church and School, as well as Bishop Montgomery High School. She was an avid supporter of her children's activities and was always found in the stands at Little League, Pop Warner, and high school sports events. A well-known fixture at BMHS, she is remembered as a supportive "mom" to many former students. A member of the Crazy Quilters, she spent many afternoons with her close group of friends, quilting, crocheting, or just laughing. Betty loved family, New York City, and a good joke. Betty joins her husband Arnold in watching over her family. She is survived by her children Jim (Kathleen) Schaeffer; Mike (Barbara) Schaeffer; Paula (Jeff) Breeher; Julie Williford; Ken (Susan) Schaeffer; and Dave (Marianne) Schaeffer. She is also survived by 12 grandchildren: Jeremiah, Patrick, Kevin, Megan, Katherine, Alex, Greg, Erica, Steven, Andrew, Timothy, and Sarah. She is also survived by sister-in-law, Agnes Wemhoff. Visitation will be held at Rice Mortuary in Torrance on Thursday June 22, 2006 from 5 to 7pm, followed by a Rosary Service at 7pm. The Funeral Mass will be held at St. Lawrence Martyr Catholic Church in Redondo Beach on Friday June 23 at 10am. A gathering of family and friends will follow at the St. Lawrence Parish Hall. Private Internment will be held at Riverside National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Heart Association, or to the charity of your choice.

  3. Walter and I, along with our children and their families (Jan, Terese, Jean, Tom, Steven, Michael and Kathleen) offer our condolences to Betty’s family. Before Betty’s departure from Torrance, we had discussions about our slovak heritage among other things on our frequent trips to Costco. She often scowled when she voiced a strong opinion, but smiled many more times when she was among family and friends. We will miss her smile and her spirit.

  4. Our sincere and deepest sympathy goes out to your family. May God’s love guide you during this time of sorrow. I will miss Betty and cherish our conversations and friendship throughout the years. Sincerely, Pat Chapman(Simpson) and family.
