Betty was born on March 28, 1924, in Des Moines, IA, to Dr. M. Owen and Clara Belle Kellison. She came into this world five minutes behind her twin sister Katy Lou (and never tired of telling people that she was the younger sister). Betty and Katy attended Phillips University, Butler, and Chapman College. Betty earned a Bachelor of Education. and became a teacher. In mid-1940 Betty met a handsome, young Marine in the sanctuary of Wilshire Christian Church, where her father was the minister. Betty and Howard "Howie" were married in 1946. They made their home in the South Bay where they raised four children. Betty was a teacher and Howie was a principal. Betty retired from teaching after 30 years, but continued subbing into her 70's. Betty loved movies, books, and beach walks. She and Howie were active members of their church community, and traveled the world after retirement. Above all, though, Betty loved spending time with family. She will be greatly missed by her children: Ron (Mary Kaye) Huizing, Kathy (Charles Joseph) Filatreau-Jaurequi, Don (Nancy) Huizing, Kelly Berg; six grandchildren Daniel Filatreau, Jordan (Kahlil) Wells, Nicholas (Jessica) Huizing, Kimberly Berg, Amanda and Phillip Huizing; two great-grandchildren Oxanna Huizing and Ellora Wells and her entire extended family. She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; and beloved siblings Katy Lou Neal and Mary Jean Kellison. Services are entrusted to White and Day Mortuary, Torrance, CA. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested friends honor Betty's memory through the Kellison Memorial Scholarship at Chapman University, One University Drive, Orange, CA 92866.
