Bernell Merl Oberbeck, who was known as "Shorty" to his friends, died peacefully at his home in Torrance on Oct. 30, 2007, he was 84. Shorty was born on Dec. 13, 1922 in Bond County, Illinois. His parents were Fred and Clara Oberbeck. He served in the U.S. Army Air Force in World War II and was a flight engineer aboard the B-24 bomber "Crow's Nest." He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and a Purple Heart for his service. Shorty moved his family to Torrance in 1956. He retired from the Redondo Beach Post Office after 30 years of service. He was preceded in death by his twin brother, Odell. Shorty was married to his wife Harriett for 58 years and was the father of three sons: Ed, Steven and Kevin, all of whom live in the Salt Lake City area. He had 7 granddaughters and one grandson. His great grandson, Conner, was born on Sept. 11, 2007. At Shorty's request, there will be no services.
