Barbara Hammer July 22, 1925 - November 30, 2011 Barbara Hammer, a long time Manhattan Beach resident, passed away November 30, 2011 in Redondo Beach. Barbara was born in 1925 in Cananea, Mexico to American parents, Leon and Vera Dupuy, where Leon was working as a mining engineer. Barbara spent most of her early years in the LA Area including Hermosa Beach. When her father got a job with the U.S. government, they moved frequently around the US throughout Barbara's teen years. Barbara graduated from Greenbelt High School in Maryland and attended Western Maryland College for two years. However, her heart remained in Southern California, and in 1945 she transferred to USC, where she earned both Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Music. She was a member of the Phi Mu sorority and the Mu Phi Epsilon music sorority, as well as being a member of the USC Acappella Choir and participating in theater productions. After college, Barbara moved to Manhattan Beach and landed her first teaching position at Grandview School. Barbara taught grade school in Manhattan Beach and then El Segundo until her retirement in 1983.Barbara was an accomplished vocalist and was honored for 60 years of service to the Manhattan Beach Community Choir. She also at various times directed the Youth and Senior choirs. With her husband George she participated in many MBCC theater productions, including playing the Mother Abbess and being choral director for Sound of Music. Barbara loved to travel and used her retirement to visit Europe, Asia and South America, as well as various parts of the US. One highlight was performing with the MBCC choir in the Vatican. Barbara had a kind heart, a ready smile and a zest for living. She will be greatly missed. Barbara was preceded in death by her husband of 40 years, George. She is survived by her son Mark and daughter-in-law Shannon, son Doug, and grandchildren Tim and Brittany.
