Amelia
NEVAREZ, AMELIA RUIZ, a resident of Gardena for over 80 years, possessed a generous spirit that was indispensable to her family and friends in times of both joy and sorrow. In joy, Millie was an active member of St. Anthony of Padua Church, the Gardena Sister City Association and the American Legion Women's Auxiliary, which she served as president. She taught Spanish at both St. Anthony School in Gardena and Hermosa View Elementary School in Hermosa Beach. She doted on her grandsons. Upon the passing of her beloved mother, Refugio Presa (''Mama Cuca'') Ruiz, Millie assumed the role of family matriarch and presided over the family's many baptisms, weddings, and other celebrations. In sorrow, she mourned the untimely passing of many loved ones: her husband Jesus (''Jess'') Nevarez; her daughter Christine Mallett; her father Ysidoro (''Papa Lolo'') Ruiz; her brothers Frank, Robert and Charles; and her sister Stella Zamora. Millie was born in Aguascalientes, Mexico, on May 22, 1917, and died at home in Gardena, California, on July 1, 2002. She is survived by her son Charles; her grandchildren Sean and Brandon Mallett; and her sister Rachel Adam. A memorial mass will be celebrated at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 9 at St. Anthony of Padua in Gardena.

  2. La familia de la Sra. Millie Nevarez, Since I don\’t have an address to send a more personal message I am using this site. Our family is greatly saddened by the news of the passing of Millie. We met her when she was teaching Spanish in Hermosa. Our children and many, many other children were very fortunate to have had her as a teacher. She not only taught Spanish, she included music and dance and her rich cultural heritage. We have a great picture of our our son Chris dancing with her (He\’s about six years old at the time)! She was a special teacher but she will also be remembered for her great spirit and warmth. With sincere condolence, The Garcia Family-Vicki, Guillermo, Erica and Christopher

  3. My Mother, Cora Sepulveda and I would like to offer our sincere sympathy\’s. Although I didn\’t know her very well and only saw her at special functions, I\’ll always remember her as being a very vivacious person. And I know she will be greatly missed by all who knew her. I know my Aunt Tima and Uncle John Ayala would also want me to add their condolences, since they knew her and all the family for so many years. It was as much of a shock to hear of Millie\’s passing as it was when I heard about her sister, Stella Zamora. Sincere Condolences to your Family…… Jeanette Hanson, Cora, Fernando and Sylvia Sepulveda
